Welcome to Prof. Eyal Kurzbaum's Environmental Biotechnology lab

Our research group, affiliated with the Shamir Research Institute, University of Haifa, explores a broad range of topics in environmental microbiology, focusing primarily on water treatment. Our current projects include the removal of micropollutants and disinfection by-products from water, identifying novel antimicrobials from microalgae and fungi for combating plant pathogens, and studying the Psilocybe fungi for its potential in developing psychoactive pharmaceuticals.

Research interests

  1. Biological removal of micro-pollutants from water
  2. Agricultural wastewater purification (dairy farms, fish ponds, olive mills)
  3. Removal of nitrogen compounds from water
  4. Immobilization and encapsulation of microbial biomass (bacteria and fungi)
  5. Characterization and application of antimicrobial compounds in microalgae and fungi against phytopathogens
  6. Removal of disinfection by-products from drinking water
  7. Exploring Psilocybe fungi grown in a bioreactor in yielding psychoactive biomolecules
