Prof. Eyal Kurzbaum leads the Environmental Biotechnology laboratory at the Shamir Research Institute, University of Haifa. His research focuses on innovative solutions in environmental microbiology, particularly in water treatment and purification. Current projects include the biological removal of micropollutants and disinfection by-products from water sources, purification of agricultural wastewater from dairy farms, fish ponds, and olive mills, and the study of antimicrobial compounds derived from microalgae and fungi to combat plant pathogens. Additionally, his lab explores the cultivation of Psilocybe fungi in bioreactors to develop psychoactive biomolecules with pharmaceutical potential.
